Human Geo Blog 9-17-17
In Human Geo today we were discussing how the traditional map that is used in schools is actually not to scale. If you look on the map, you can see that the country of Greenland is a lot bigger than it actually is, and Africa is way smaller than it's actual size. Why is this? The original map was developed a while ago to help sailors or their journey, but as time progressed we understood that the map was very wrong and needed a change. A new map was developed: The Peters World Map. This map easily showed the continents and countries in their true form. Later on, we also talked about how schools should switch to the Peter's map because it is more to-scale and up to date. One key fact was that the map is still used today to make our country look bigger and better than it actually is, and the stereotype begins. This is what we had learned and discussed in Human Geo today.
