Notes
Fertile valleys cover 1/4 of the peninsula and only about 20% is arable, or able to be used for crops, farming, etc...
The Greek diet was mainly grain, olives, grapes, and fish. Meat wasn't a big food there because each animal had to be sacrificed.
The lack of basic farming resources made colonization.
The temperature in Greece ranged from 40º in the winter to 80º in the summer.
Mycenaeans
Their influence began around 2,000 BC
Mycenae is located on a rocky ridge on Peloponnesus protected by a 20-foot thick wall.
The kings dominated Greece from 1600-1100 BC
1400 BC - the Mycenaeans invaded Crete and absorbed the Minoan culture and way of life
The goddesses Athena, Aphrodite, and Here were given the "apple of discord"
Paris judged Aphrodite as the "fairest"
Aphrodite made Helen fall in love with Paris who took her back to Troy. Helen's current husband (a king) declared war on Troy because of this.
Around 1200 BC the sea people began to invade Mycenae. They(Dorians) burnt the palaces.
The Dorians were not an advanced society and between 1150-750 BC there was the Greek Dark Age
