Today in West. Civ. we watched some more of the same video and learned more about philosophy. I will add some notes in the next blog for philosophy because I do not have my copybook here right now. I enjoyed class today.

Today in Western Civ. we watched this person on YouTube explain philosophy and confused me a little, but it was still interesting. I have thought about thinking, and that sort of thing, and I hope we stay on this very interesting topic for a while.

Today in Western Civ. we went over Socrates. I already know about him so I will not include his notes in this blog today. I enjoyed Western Civ. today.

Today in Western Civ. I redid my test and took some notes.
Democracy in the Golden Age:
Direct Democracy - Citizens rule directly without a representative
Classical Art - values of harmony, order, balance, and proportion
Tragedy - a drama about common topics and relations like love, hate, war, betrayal.
Comedy - scenes with slapstick situations.
Peloponnesian War - between the city-states Athens and Sparta. Athens = stronger navy. Sparta = stronger army.
Philosopher - thinkers or lovers of wisdom.
Socrates - A critic of the Sophists, thought their standards were nonexistent.
Sophists - A group of philosophers, with Protagoras, who he questioned greek gods and their existence.
Plato - a student of Socrates that wrote down some of his conversations before his death. Wrote The Republic in the 370s B.C.
Aristotle - Questioned the world's nature and humanity's belief and knowledge.

Today, we went over the quiz questions and then asked questions. The test seems pretty easy but I won't be here for it Friday.

Today in Western Civilization we just went over our papers and studied. Mr. Schick gave us a better grade on our paper and I was really happy to get a couple more points. That was all we did in West. Civ.

Today in Western Civ. we took some notes in the beginning of class and here they are now:
- Polis - the fundamental political unit in ancient Greece. It was made up of a city and its surrounding countryside.
- Acropolis - a fortified hilltop in which it contained an agora.
- Monarchy - A king, queen, or both rule.
- Aristocracy - A government ruled by a small group of noble, landowning families.
- Oligarchy - A government ruled by a couple/few powerful people.
- Tyrants - Powerful people who decided to seize the current government and take control of it.
- Democracy - Rule by the people
- Helots - Peasants that are forced to stay on the land they worked.
- Phalanx - a formation of foot soldiers.
- Persian Wars - Between Greece and the Persian Empire, in Ionia and Anatolia's coast.

Today in Western Civ. we went over a little project we are doing based on our recent lesson on Greece. I think Greece is an interesting country and their culture is very different, but they're methodology was adopted by hundreds of countries worldwide. I enjoyed class today and will finish the project tomorrow.
