HALLOWEEN!

It is Halloween today, but I am not going to be doing anything for it, just stay home and do nothing. Anyway, in Human Geography we took a couple notes on the previous topic of population, as shown:

Why do people migrate?

Push Forces - ones that make someone want to leave a country

  • civil wars
  • environmental degradation
  • un/under employment
  • Religious or ethnic persecution or major and unaccepted bias

Pull Forces - ones that make you want to enter a country

  • better economic opportunity
  • Better health services/care
  • Religious freedom
  • Political freedom

In class today, please read the rest of this blog, take notes on this material, and post the notes in your blog. Then, go online and find two other definitions of Globalization, and post them to your blog. ALSO, do the assignment that is described under "Thinking Geographically: From Global to Local." Post this information to your blog.

Globalization Definition One: the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.

Globalization Definition Two: fears about the increasing globalization of the world economy

Thinking Geographically: From Global to Local

Take some time to freely and openly explore your own personal items (computers, notebooks, pencil cases, clothes) and various different items in the classroom. Record where your items come from or where they are made. Think about the things that you use most at your home. Do you know the name brands of the items that you use the most? (i.e. TV, Samsung, Computer, Apple) List these items and their country of origin. Try answer these questions about each item: What company made them? Where is that company from? Where was your specific product made? Enter this information in your blog.

Most of my items are from China/made in China. Most of the items I use at home and school are made by Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft (computer and phone wise, as well as refrigerator.) All are made in China.

iPhone: Apple. From California. Made in China.
Macbook Pro: Apple. From California. Made in China.
Calculator, TI-84: Texas Instruments. From Texas. Made in the Philippines.

In Human Geography today, we did scale from land to global. Here are the notes

Geographers think about scale at many levels, from local to global. At a local state, such as an urban neighbourhood, geographers tend to see unique features. At a global scale, encompassing the entire world, geographers use to see broad patterns.

In Human Geography today we did some more of the CIA.GOV website quest and were assigned to find an interesting country and locate one interesting fact about it. No, I did not do Azerbaijan, surprisingly. I actually did the Pitcairn Islands, and boy was it a weird place. I found some videos on the small island and noticed that all of the natives that lived there were general hippies. I couldn't see a major difference between an average American and the people of Pitcairn, but that is excluding the accent difference. I enjoyed finding my fact of their language, which is either English or Pitkern (English from the 18th century mixed with the Tahitian language derivatives). I enjoyed this class activity.

Today in Human Geo we visited cia.gov and looked at the fact book. In the fact book, there is a list of countries, and when you click on one of the countries, it shows a lot of facts about them like introduction, geography, people and society, government, economy, communications, transportations, military and security, and transnational issues. We also did a map in class that contained the following countries in order of population:

1. China
2. India
3. United States
4. Indonesia
5. Brazil
6. Pakistan
7. Nigeria
8. Bangladesh
9. Russia
10. Japan
11. Mexico
12. Ethiopia
13. Philippines
14. Egypt
15. Vietnam
16. Dem. Rep. of the Congo
17. Iran
18. Turkey
19. Germany
20. Thailand
21. France
22. United Kingdom
23. Italy
24. Burma
25. South Africa

In human geography today we took some notes and were handed back our tests. We actually scored better than the honors class which was really good. I was happy with my grade, a 100%, and was surprised that the honors class didn't get all A's. I was thinking maybe our class could be moved into honors because it'd look so much better on a college record. I don't actually know why I wasn't put in Honors Geo because I had a 101% in my class at Saint Margaret and think I did well on the Standardized Test, maybe not? Nevertheless, I enjoyed Human Geo today.

Human Geography October 5th 2017

In Human Geography today we were talking about time and how it is just an illusion that may do us more harm than good. We discussed how the time zones were just recently established in 1900. One time for the entire world to go by was not an idea that was never proposed. In 1879, Fleming decided to propose a global 24hr time to the world, which obviously was not accepted and/or approved. I think it would be interesting to have one singular time, but it would be very difficult to get used to. After Human Geo, we saw the PowderPuff game outside for the remainder of the period. I enjoyed the game and Human Geography today.

Human Geography Blog October 4th 2017

In human Geography today, we finished our maps that showed each area in the USA which always or usually votes Democratic or Republican. We will later on learn why these states vote the way they do based on their location. We also discussed how the election system works and why if one candidate wins a bigger ratio of votes, they get the entire state. I think in some ways it is fair and some ways it isn't fair, at least she didn't win that is all that matters. I enjoyed Human Geography class today.

Blog October 3rd 2017

In Human Geography we took some notes and looked at a map that were were supposed to work on. Here are some of the notes:

An area on earth defined by one or more distinctive characteristics.

Region /\

Cultural Landscape: A combination of cultural features such as language, religion, physical human characteristics.

Types of regions: designation of regions larger than a point and smaller than the entire planet of earth.

We discussed what it would be like if humans lived on other planets and whatnot.

I enjoyed human geography today-ish... eh
