Diocletain divided empire into two

  • Greek-Speaking East (more resources)
  • Latin-Speaking West (Rome, tradition)
AD 324 - Constantine becomes emperor of both halves
  • Capital of Rome changed to Byzantium
  • after Constantine's death, it was split again
  • this time barbarians (Huns, Vandals, Visigoths, Angles, Saxons, Franks) overrun the empire's frontiers
